When I was 17, I had one goal: to move to the United States and
chase the American dream.

I had no college degree, few connections, but a strong burning desire. I tried every legal way to get into the US: tourist visas, business visitor visas, the E2 Visa (denied for stupid bureaucratic reasons), and I even considered enrolling in college just to obtain the work-restrictive F1 Student Visa. Anything to not be stuck in my parents' house in Canada (sorry mom).

This whole time, I had overlooked the O-1 Visa—the elusive, "extraordinary ability" visa for people at the pinnacle of their fields.

There's no limit on how many can be issued, no lottery—just pure merit. If you qualify, you can work for three years, renew it infinitely, and immediately apply for the EB1A Green Card (the highest priority employment-based green card) with nearly the same qualifications.

So how could I apply?

I talked with numerous lawyers, often paying for expensive consultations. Some said I was not good enough; others told me to strengthen my profile before they could take me on. I reached out to every O-1 Visa holder I could find to learn what it took to qualify. After months of struggle—enhancing my qualifications, chasing down signatures, and spending thousands in legal fees—I assembled a successful application.

By 20, I obtained my first O-1A Visa. Six months later, I was approved for the EB1A Green Card, the ultimate goal I'd been working toward.

But here's the thing: I realized the biggest obstacle to getting an O-1 was the lack of accessible information. What qualifies for each O-1 qualification? Who can sponsor me? Who are reliable lawyers? There's so much gatekeeping, and even then, lawyers have incomplete information on all the ways you can get the O-1.

Skilled immigration shouldn't be this hard.

At the start of 2024, I made a Youtube video sharing how I got the O-1 Visa and qualified for each category. In the months following my video, many more young people started applying for and getting the O-1 Visa.
